What are Village Signs?
Village signs are emblems that depict the heritage, history and culture of the villages (or towns) they represent. Each sign is unique to their respective village, and may be made of wrought or cast iron, carved out of wood, fibreglass or metal, or painted on wood. The signs are often produced as a result of community efforts. For instance, to celebrate the Queen's Silver Jubilee, many signs were erected due to WI's efforts. More recently, numerous new signs have been produced during the last two years as part of the celebrations for the Millennium. Most village signs are on posts in central positions in the village, such as near the church or pub, or on the village green.
There are around 3,000 village signs in Britain so only a mere fraction of them can be shown on the website. Below is a selected list of village signs showing the variety and geographical spread of them. Only a few counties have been represented, but in time this list will be enlarged to reflect all counties having village signs.
