VILLAGE SIGNS
Village signs are emblems depicting the heritage, history and culture of the villages they represent. It is a fascinating and enjoyable pastime trying to decipher what is on them or photographing them.
National celebrations such as the Millennium and The Queen's Silver, Gold and Diamond Jubilees provided a reason for village communities to mark these events by erecting a new village sign.
Each village sign is unique, usually produced as a result of community efforts and are placed on a prominent site in the village. Believed to have been originated by Edward VII for villages around Sandringham, there are now over five thousand village signs in Great Britain.
